Obituary of Rhys Griffiths

Please share a memory of Rhys to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Lindsay Rhys Griffiths, MA, P. Eng., a devoted husband and father, who passed on peacefully after a battle with cancer.  He is predeceased by his son, David, and survived by his wife, Annabel; sons, Peter and Tony; and daughter-in-law Kim.  He was 92 years young.

Rhys was born in London in 1925 where he spent his formative years.  He was with the British Army, serving in Palestine and Germany, from 1944 to 1957 before moving to Canada.  Rhys worked for Bell and Bell Canada International (BCI) for whom he travelled Ontario and the world. After retiring from BCI, Rhys worked in Tanzania under a CIDA contract for 5 years repairing telephone lines for the railway.

In 1996, Rhys retired to Langley with Annabel where he began contributing to the local community in many ways, ranging from serving breakfast at the local grade school to joining and contributing to Probus, was an active member of churches in Langley and Fort Langley, and enjoyed playing at the Langley Lawn Bowling Club.  In Langley, he found his love of conservation and environmental causes, contributing significantly to the Langley Field Naturalists as a member and then eventually as treasurer and president from 1997 to 2001.  He has worked with Langley City Hall on raising awareness of local environmental issues.  He was the City of Langley Senior of the Year in 2006.  He also received a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of his long-standing community efforts during the Queen’s Jubilee Year in 2012.

A special note of thanks to the wonderful staff, nurses and doctors in the palliative care wing at the Surrey Memorial Hospital and Langley Hospice for all their aid and assistance during this challenging time.

A celebration of life service will be held at 3 PM on February 10th, 2018 at St. George’s Anglican Church, 9160 Church St., Fort Langley, BC, (https://stgeorgeanglican.ca).

In lieu of flowers, kindly make a donation to the Care Canada (https://care.ca or https://www.care-international.org) on his behalf.
