Dr Bate was my vet as a child and I also had the privilege of riding horses, hunting and eventing with him as part of the Hope Riding Club and other groups. He was one of my favorite people!! I just found this online as I as recently wondering about him. I last saw him in the early 2000's. He saved many of my animals lives over the years, and taught me a lot especially with horses. He was so exuberant and whimsical and one of the most fun people to ride horses with. I'm sad I never got to see him again. So many memories!! There was the time he got dumped off into the huge water jump on Bristol Island just to get back on and finish the course soaking wet and still smiling!! I will forever envision him sailing over a big old cross country fence on one of his high strung young thoroughbreds shouting Wahoooooo! Rest Peacefully Doc!!!!

Such a kind, gentle, funny man. When I first moved to Hope I thought here is the epitome of the "country vet" but he was so up to date on my old dogs state of the art meds. a few months later he helped her go to sleep in my arms in the nicest way possible. Then I accidentally got into rescue and he was always available with help and advice and I owe a lot of my skill to his teaching. You made this world a better place sir and it was a privilege to have known you.

When I was 15, I found a small kitten absolutely terrified on Wallace St. It had a broken tail and was malnourished + sick. I took her to Dr. Bate and told him I didn't have much money but wanted to help the kitten. He told me he would let me know how the kitten was doing and if I couldn't afford to pay the bill, he'd find a good home for her. The kitten was close to death but about a week later was healthy enough that he called me and asked me if I wanted to bring her home. I said I really wanted to but it depended on the cost. He said $50 and that I'd have to get her fixed. I was so happy! It was obvious the actual costs of curing the cat were much more than $50. I called the cat "Kink" because of her broken tail. She was quite the quirky character. I was always grateful to him. He had a huge heart and will be sorely missed.

A very kind man with such a gift for helping animals. Of some of the few treatments he gave our little dog, I'll always remember the thoughtful "prescription" after treating her after her very first and swelling bee sting; "take her for a vanilla ice cream to help with the swelling." He said with a smile. And that we did. Thank you for your kind caring Dr. Bates. We shall see you again.
Condolences to the family for your loss.

I am so sorry for your loss.. Dr. Bate took care of all of our animals, cats, dogs, guinea pigs, birds and even a starling I found injured... though he told me they were the bane of the farmers existence he helped me nurture it to health.
I left Hope 20 years ago but have never forgotten him and his wonderful humor and continue to tell stories of my vet in Hope who was so much like Dr. Dolittle. May your memories sustain you through the days ahead. My prayers for your family. Shelley

So sad to hear of a great man. Many memories volunteer in with my sister kari whom worked in both of the clinics with great him and great staff. Kari and I use to watched his farm and animals when he would go away on holidays. We won't forget his laugh! He was super funny as well. Thoughts and our sincere go out to the Bates family.

Dr. Bate was an old fashioned, common sense, holistic, natural wonder type of vet. He was a rarity in today's world of drugs drugs drugs and truly upheld the idea of "First, do no harm." He was a hands-on fearless medical professional whose depth of true love for all living beings was evident. I only hope that his methods and style were the inspiration for other vets to offer the same kind of compassion, empathy and common sense to all creatures, great and small, and their 'owners'. It was a privilege to have met him and have him care for our furry family members.
