To the family, sorry to hear of his passing. I had the blessing to have had Mr.Coates as my grade 5 teacher in Prince George BC, at Springwood Elementary. John was like a second dad to me. He was so kind and compassionate. He had a great sense of humour, and loved all his students. I have never forgotten him, such a beautiful soul.

Your dad was my daughter Justine's favorite teacher at IC. They had a connection when it came to the outdoors. His love for nature and how he talked about it sparked an interest in her during her grade 6 year. She has a love for the outdoors, camping and photographing nature. Your dad left a lasting legacy with Justine. Mr. John Coates was an amazing teacher and a very special individual. He will truly be missed. God bless and may he rest in peace.

To the daughters and family of Mr. Coates. I attended immaculate Conception from K to 7, and Mr. Coates taught me in one of my grade 6 classes. He was so warm hearted and caring to all of his students. He encouraged us all to be stewards to the environment, and to clean up litter and take care of our surroundings as much as we could. I wish that I could attend his funeral, but I love on the island and cannot book off work. I and many of his students are saddened at his passing. He will be fondly remembered by so, so many of his IC Delta students. I wish the family much love and support in this sad time.
Rest in Peace Mr. Coates.
Sincerely,
Ciara Stewart

Dear Joanne, Jacqueline and Alison,
I am so very sorry for the loss of your dad, it was an enormous shock for all. You can be at peace that he went so quickly, it would not have been fair for him to suffer.
I have many fond childhood and adulthood memories of him and all of your family, including your beloved mom. The two are resting in peace, this must bring a small sense of gratitude and help in your suffering.
Love Leah

Sincere condolences to the Coates family.
I had the privilege of working with John when he was teaching Grade 6 at Immaculate Conception School. Even though we were not in touch over the years, I remember John as a kind, thoughtful and caring gentleman. He was always ready with a smile.
Remember that this a new beginning for your father. He is with the Lord.
God's blessings, Elizabeth Ellis

Sincere condolences to Jacqueline, Allison, Joanne and their families.
John was a very good old friend, we first met in 1960 in Cornwall. I have lots of good memories of John and Val from those days . We worked together several times, as students then as mining engineers, before his teaching career.
It has been a pleasure to get to know his family over the years. I will miss being able to call him and chat about life in general and also miss our lunches out with a beer and sandwich.
John was a true friend.
God Bless.
Tony.

Dear Jacqueline, Allison, Joanne and their families
I have been informed that my "Canadian Uncle John" passed away last week.
I am extremely sad as he is a piece of my story .
I had the privilege to spend a couple of hours with him during his visit to Paris last year and we shared a great moment driving around Paris, taking pictures in front of the Eiffel tower, etc.
Our families are separated by the long distance but united by a long lasting friendship (Adrienne and Frank with Suzanne and Louis; Valerie and John with Anne Marie and Bernard) and it is now our generation's heritage to nurrish this friendship.
Please be convinced of my sorrow and accept my deepest codolences and a warm hug for each of you.
RIP
Anne Christine

Although our family live in the UK we were lucky enough to spend some quality time with Uncle John and our Canadian relatives last year when they visited and so have wonderful memories that will be with us forever. Uncle John was a kind, generous man with a wicked sense of humour. He adored his family, had many friends and he will be remembered by us all with fondness. Our thoughts are with you at this sad time.xxx

Death - - - the last sleep? No, the final awakening.
(Poeme by Walter Scott)
, His death woke me up again to plain reality of life, and I found that what matters more is not blood relation..but heart connection.
I had the pleasure of meeting John Coates one day visiting his daughter Jacqueline (my dear friend). Unfortunately, I met him when his bride had just passed away, under the circumstances I found him to be thoughtful, a true gentleman, shaking my hand as he stood up greeting me with a kind smile , making me feel at home.Throughout our time together he smiled non stop and made me felt like I was part of his family and watching him at the supper table laughing with his grandchildren Benjamin and Mathew like they were his buddies, was hilarious! What a great supper that was they were laughing so much, so I thought, hmmm, let me tell you a story that happened to me in Wales, what I ate in a restaurant ... well did they ever laugh! John called me lovely after that hilarious story, I thought , wow what a neat person!
Alors, Monsieur Coates, aller dans les bras de votre épouse une fois de plus... ... pour toujours!♡♥
