Every culture and every country has a specific way of memorializing people that have passed away. There are different ways of honoring the dead such as burying the person in a casket, scattering the ashes at sea etc. Another unique way of honoring the deceased is to build a memorial.

Unique Memorials

This is typically a reflection of a person's actions and the influence or effect they had on society. Sometimes a memorial maybe built to honor more than one individual as well. Here we take a look at some unique memorials from across the globe:

  • The Motherland Calls- This immense and imposing statue is located in Volgograd (previously Stalingrad, Russia) on a hill named Mamayev Kurgan. It was built in the year 1967 to commemorate the Battle of Stalingrad. At 279 feet, it was the world's tallest structure at that time. Valentina Izotova posed for this statue and she was a native of the Stalingrad city.
  • The Marasesti Heroes Mausoleum- This monument is situated in Romania and was constructed to commemorate the courageous people that had lost their lives in the Battle of Marasesti. This structure has been built on the grounds where more than 24,000 Romanian troops had lost their lives during WW1 while successfully defeating the Germans.
  • The Heroes of the Ghetto Square- This particular memorial is located in Kraków, Poland. It commemorates the very first mass rebellion that took place against the Nazis. It was unveiled in the year 1943 post the Jewish Ghetto Uprising.
  • The Marine Corps War Memorial- This bronze memorial is situated in Virginia near the Arlington National Cemetery in Rosslyn, Virginia. It was constrcucted in honor of the Marine Corps that lost their lives while defending the U.S from post 10 November 1775.
