Following cremation, the ashes are usually placed in a temporary urn. To hold the remains, crematories typically use rigid cardboard containers lined with heavy-duty plastic bags. Cremated remains are generally transported in a single, clearly labeled container. Choosing The Right Urn

There are many options available, ranging from companion urns to keepsake urns. Bronze, marble, concrete, wood, and glass are just a few of the materials available. There are a few things to consider if you intend to give your own urn for cremated remains:

  • The urn you choose should honor the wishes of the person who died and their family members.
  • If the deceased person cared deeply about the planet, a biodegradable urn might be the most fitting tribute.
  • If they have minimalist tastes, an elaborate version is probably not what you want to give them.
  • The perfect urn will most likely stand out, but remembering the deceased's distinct personality will make the selection process even more meaningful.

How To Choose An Appropriate Urn For Cremated Remains

As a general rule, one cubic inch of cremated remains corresponds to one pound of body weight after cremation. It is advised that you select an urn slightly larger than required. Typically, cremated remains weigh between 3 and 7 pounds and occupy between 180 and 220 cubic inches. If you intend to store the urn in a columbarium, find out from the local authorities the maximum urn size allowed. Some examples are as follows:

  • 220 lb. individual needs an urn approximately 220 cubic inches/larger
  • 150 lb. individual needs an urn approximately 150 cubic inches/larger 
  • 140 lb. individual needs an urn approximately 140 cubic inches/larger
  • 50 lb. individual needs an urn approximately 50 cubic inches/larger
  • 25 lb. individual needs an urn approximately 25 cubic inches/larger

Note:  Keep in mind that a number of other variables affect the number of ashes you will end up receiving from the crematorium.
