I Have Pre-Planned At One Funeral home, Can I Switch Funeral Homes?

Planning a funeral for oneself isn’t always an easy task, but today many people opt for this type of funeral arrangement. They sign a contract with the funeral home of their choice and prepay for their funeral. While there are a number of benefits to pre-planning your own funeral, there are certain benefits to prepaying for it as well such as:

  • You can plan the funeral exactly how you want it to be, down to the type of coffin or ceremony you want and the flower arrangements etc.

  • Your family doesn’t have to be burdened with the cost of your funeral as you make the payment in advance.

  • If you want to be cremated at a specific spot you can choose it today and pay for it; sometimes the location you desire may not be available in the future.

Things to keep in mind

While there are a number of benefits to preplanning and prepaying for your funeral, many people also wonder whether they can switch funeral homes if they have planned and paid for it at one place already. This situation may arise in case they relocate to a different city, town or state or if they feel that they prefer the services provided at a different funeral home.

Whether you can switch funeral homes after prepaying for one depends entirely on the type of contract you have signed with the first one. Most well-established funeral homes provide the option to transfer the funds to another funeral home as long as you pay the penalty or administrative fee for the rights to transfer your contract. It’s important to read the terms and conditions properly before signing anything.
