Holidays Without a Loved One - How to Cope

The grieving process is very challenging and many people approach it differently. But regardless of where a person is in the grieving process, holidays can be stressful and painful. Holidays are a time to celebrate with friends and family, it’s a time to cherish the people in your life and spend time with them. This can be difficult if you’ve lost someone because all of these celebrations can bring back memories of your loved ones and make you miss them more. Here are some ways to cope with the season:

1. Change the ritual

Sometimes doing the same things you did with the decedent can make the holiday season painful. For example, decorating a Christmas tree can be painful if you did it with your loved one every Christmas. Change that ritual and do something that doesn’t bring back memories of the loved one. This will help you through the grieving process.

2. Spend time away from family

Being around people who have experienced the same loss can make it difficult for you to focus on your own healing, especially during the holidays. Schedule a trip with friends and people who haven’t experienced the same loss. That will help you through the healing process.

3. Give yourself some time and space to grieve

Many people give into the pressure and attend family functions or holiday parties even if they’re not emotionally ready for it. Keep in mind that you’re not obligated to attend these parties and can take a break from them. You can also leave these parties early and most loved ones will understand.
