Can I Scatter Cremated Remains Over Water

The former is an eco-friendly, cost-effective way to dispose of the mortal remains of a person. Some people also expressly mention their preference for cremation in their Will or preplan contract.

Some Rules To Keep In View

After cremation, the family receives the ashes, and many wonder whether they can scatter the remains over water. It is permitted to scatter ashes over water, but everything cast into it must degrade quickly. According to the EPA, cremains can be buried at sea, however, there are a few practices and regulations to observe while dispersing ashes:

  • Ashes, may only be disposed of in the ocean at least three nautical miles from shore.
  • A boat or an aircraft can be used to sprinkle ashes.
  • Only biodegradable urns are permitted to be used. In a marine environment, everything put in the water must degrade quickly.
  • Flowers or wreaths may be released into the sea, but they must degrade quickly.
  • While a permit is not necessary, you must notify the EPA within 30 days of the burial.
  • Individuals who want to disperse cremated ashes on private property or land that is covered by water must first get permission from the landowner.
