Scattering Ashes At Sea

After the cremation process, the funeral home will give you your loved one’s ashes and you have the option to either place them in an urn in a columbarium or in your home. Alternatively, you can bury them in a cemetery or in your backyard or even scatter them at sea.

How a Memorial At Sea Works

In BC, the latter is permissible and we at Arbutus Funeral Service offer this solution to clients. They work with providers that offer memorials at sea and people can pay their respects to the deceased in the calm and serene beauty of the open seas.

Family, as well as close friends, congregate for a ceremonial service onboard a yacht. When cruising to a designated ceremonial destination, they can express their memorable stories and experiences they shared with the departed. This service can include a scattering of flowers, the release of doves, fireworks, and more. You can also opt for catering options on these yachts.

In situations where the decedent’s family is unable to attend (great distance, age or illness etch) the ship’s Captain will take the ashes on the yacht and perform an handle the scattering on your behalf. If you need a particular prayer chanted or any other similar requests, those can be accommodated too.

A Good Way to Memorialize Your Loved One

Most providers will also give you a video of the scattering of ashes ceremony and the GPS location of where it was held. These become a keepsake for you.  It isn’t uncommon for families to want a unique funeral or memorial service and this is a very elegant way to pay respects to your loved deceased one.
