How To Help Someone Who Has Lost Their Pet

It is easy to underestimate just how painful and devastating the loss of a pet can be. These companions become part of a person's family. They offer unconditional love and support that can help people overcome several hardships. At Arbutus Funeral Service, we encourage friends and family members to offer comfort to loved ones who have recently lost a pet. Here are some tips on how you can do that:

1. Respect their Grief

Don’t dismiss their pain and respect their grief. Take cues from their behavior or conversation to understand what they need. Some may want to spend time alone while others may feel the need for companionship. Listen to them when they need to vent because it is possible others may be unwilling to do so.

2. Organize a Small Memorial

A memorial is a way to honor a deceased pet and help owners find some peace. It is a meaningful, comforting event that can ease some of the grief your friend or family member may be feeling. Organize a small memorial for the pet and invite people who will offer some compassionate comfort to the event. This will show the pet owner that they aren’t alone and their grief is taken seriously.

3. Accompany Them During Final Rites

Most owners cremate their pets and this can be a difficult task. You can support your loved one by accompanying them to the crematorium and helping them dispose of the ashes. This support will go a long way to heal your loved one after the loss of their pet. You can also ask a few close friends to come along for support.
