Coping with the Death of a Sibling

Dealing with the loss of a sibling is never easy. There are several mixed emotions, unresolved issues, and a sense of responsibility towards other members of the family. At Arbutus Funeral Services, we encourage people to take care of themselves as well as their families. Here are some tips on how to handle the death of a sibling:

1. Find Time for Yourself

It is easy for people to get carried away, supporting their loved ones instead of focusing on themselves. While supporting the family is essential, you also need to focus on personal grief. Take time away from family by travelling, spending time with friends, or going on long drives. This can remove you from an environment of mourning and give you some space.

2. Share Grief With Your Family

Don’t distance yourself or hide the grief from family members. Sometimes people need to share their pain with others in similar circumstances. Discuss memories, have conversations about unresolved issues, share any feelings of guilt or loss. Let your parents offer some support and shelter during this difficult time.

3. Don't Shoulder guilt

Siblings can sometimes be cruel to one another. They can mock, bully, fight, and compete aggressively. This can cause a lot of guilt to people left behind, especially if there are some serious unresolved issues. The time for reconciliation may have passed, but there’s still room for forgiveness. Don’t shoulder the guilt and remember everything good about your relationship.

Siblings left behind must treat themselves with kindness, regardless of the kind of relationship they shared with their brother or sister.
